Why western countries didn't penetrate China completely but restricted themselves mostly to eastern rear end?

After the sea route to Asia was discovered, western merchants came calling and they established colonies throughout Asia, but China was never penetrated and violated like several other countries. Did China have little or nothing to offer in comparison to countries like Vietnam, Taiwan, Cambodia and Indonesia? How did China escape penetration by western powers?
