What is the most important reason why English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish merchants began searching for?

I'm not really too sure about this question. I'm kind of confused. I think they did it because they wanted to conquer Asia because of all the goods they had or because it was becoming too expensive to trade over land because it took too long and it was dangerous (the land routes).
